The whole spiel of why they used Stay Puft for GB84 was because it was a dig at commercialism and this clip with all the Pufts trying to eat / cook themselves feels like a nice continuation of that theme.
Nothing lessens the impact of a dig at commercialism like using that dig as an actual commercial.

The original movie had product placement with coca cola and other stuff? They even wanted Stay Puft to actually be a known entity but couldn't get the rights, right? The way they (continue to) use it here feels fine to me, but I guess we can't all be pleased. Too bad you didn't like it!

Well Columbia was owned by Coke at the time so I don’t think there was really any choice in that. Even so, product placement doesn’t bother me at all. As for the Stay Puft being a known entity, I don’t know about that. It was in Aykroyds original draft so I duno. I know Reitman was always second guessing it & wasn’t sure if it was going to work but as far as I know Stay Puft was always Stay Puft.

I don’t actively not like it. What I don’t like is Sony using it like this. Like I said, it feels desperate. I’m sure it will work in the movie but it seems like they are just late on a trend by using them in the marketing like this. And I’m sure by the time the movie comes out mini pufts will be everywhere rather than discovering it in the movie. Now it feels like a gimmick & it’s kind of tainted the whole idea. What could’ve been a nice surprise for movie goers will now be in every trailer & commercial.

Where did you read that?

As far as I know, Aykroyd took 3 existing mascot characters for inspiration: the Angelus Puft Marshmallow Man (from Aykroyd's childhood), the Michelin Man, and the Pillsbury Doughboy. He was even a little surprised when he saw the first concept, that John Daveikis' first pass had the sailor motif.

And at one point a Stay Puft Marshmallows spot was considered for either the ending or beginning of the Ghostbusters commercial. A cartoon Stay Puft Marshmallow Man would be dancing around in stop motion like the Pillsbury Doughboy. But it was deemed overkill and discarded.

O god. I don't remember! I'm not sure it isn't my mind just connecting dots that shouldn't be connected or if it was Dan, Ramis or Reitman who said that they were also toying with that idea, but kept coming back to Puft.

I *think* it was either the book about the making of, something from the Fanfestday a few years ago or from the dvd with the commentary.

When I have time I will try and excevate it.

Something everyone should keep in mind is the MASSIVE amount of marketing changes that had to be made. Whether it was footage, toys, etc. it's fair to say a lot of products were likely released "out of sync" with what Sony/etc. would have preferred.

I have nothing to back this up, but I feel like the only reason we've gotten the Mini Pufts clip is because of the cereal appearing on shelves. I highly doubt the original plans were for us to get a trailer followed up with the Mini Pufts clip.

Don't get me wrong though...it's awesome and I love the scene. :D

I have serious doubts he'd just tell anyone. "Oh yeah sure it's coming 4th of July weekend" or whatever.

Obviously eventually we'll get another one but I can't see Ghost Corps just blatantly telling us.

I think that scene's great! I love the way they used motifs from the original score, even if the scene is probably condensed from what we'll see in the movie. When I initially heard mini-Pufts I thought they were going to be, say, three and a half feet (I guess I was thinking of the marshmallow dog creatures from the video game), but I think they're more fun at four inches. I must say, I was a little surprised to see them roasting each other...

I'd be shocked if it gets moved up to May, absolutely shocked. That leaves only one month to advertise... However, the Kong vs Godzilla numbers were quite impressive (good film, I might add). I could potentially see it being bumped to June.

How far along do you guys think the CGI and editing is? I was under the impression that it was mostly done, but what do I know? With the reboot, the effects scenes improved a lot from the trailers to the final movie, but the CGI already looks fairly good in this clip. Plus, everything looks best on the big screen.

Yeah, in an ideal world, this clip has a second role:
-Mark the resurgence of the hype train, with about 31 weeks to go, we may see articles, interviews, more snippets coming
-The first of many 'character reveal' clips of the new characters and more are on the way for Muncher, the 4 children, Callie, etc.
-The clip was really a snippet from trailer #2 coming soon, and in hindsight they were trolling us

But the realist in me is this is similar to Warner Brothers when they "asked" Adam Wingard to tweet a photo with a Mecha-Godzilla toy ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong coming out in theaters and streaming. Mecha-Godzilla, the one that had already been spoiled in rumor/clickbait articles and the worse kept secret of the movie. Like you and others have mentioned, us Ghostbusters fans know when the Mini-Pufts were first leaked/spoiled but they're on cereal boxes coming out in stores, so the cat's out of the bag and the clip was just a gift, making the most of the situation.

Either way, I'm smitten new material was released.

I was under the impression it was picture locked as there had been some sort of test screening recently. I know Jason Reitman went back and did more work on it when I was pushed back from 2020.

The November 20, 2020 posts. That was at the very least, just the final mix or the finished audio like editing/removing/adding SFX, removing background noise, checking how dialogue sounds, scoring, music. Usually there's color correction and graphics after that then post production on a movie ends.

In the EMPIRE #385 article, it was stated there was a virtually finished version screened in early December.

But on December 4, Jason posted on instagram, implying all post was done and the movie was all done.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CIZHu24JJjx/

So I think they were completely done by the end of 2020.

Please don’t bite. Keep your teeth to yourself.

What would I have preferred? Isn’t it obvious? I would have preferred for them *not* to release this. Release a new trailer. Don’t release anything.I don’t know? But like I said this just feels random & desperate. Release a picture of the original GB’s on set & in gear.

I showed this to a co-worker of mine & she said something interesting. She said she doesn’t think this will be in the actual movie. That’s it is infact a specially shot bit just for marketing. Like me she noted that the aspect ratio is wrong & that the cinematography doesn’t feel like a movie. She watched the trailer and then this clip and said she’s like 65% sure this isn’t from the movie.

I don’t know if that’s true but it would certainly answer some questions. The music feels wrong. It just has this commercial feel to it. It is weird that the aspect ratio isn’t right. Hmmm

It's not uncommon for tv spots and small clips like this to be released in regular 16:9 rather than 2:35:1 or whatever is being actually used in the film.

Blowing the big reveal by releasing a shot of the surviving actors would be a bigger act of desperation than the Mini-Puft clip.

This is a critique I'm not really understanding... How does it not feel like a movie? Sure, the trailer has lots of grand, sweeping shots... But no movie is 100% grand sweeping shots.

The cinematography may not be mind-blowing, but it is perfectly fine and competent... And if we go back to the first movie, remember the largely static, competent but unremarkable cinematography of the Lab scene in the Firehouse with Dana? Peter's first conversation with Janine? The back and forth between Peter and the students during the ESP experiment? There's no snap/snap/snap editing or artsy camera angles, there's just a relatively normal shot which could almost be aimed to make it look like you're sat there in the room with them.

As one of the resident old guys in the room, they spoiled everything in the original apart from the taxi ghost! Stay Puft and Slimer and the Terror Dogs and the Ecto and the costumes were all over the marketing in the run up to release. We had cereal in the UK with pictures of them all on before the film had come out, and picture books with every character detailed. I'm pretty sure the lobby cards had at least Stay Puft and Slimer on them! Didn't matter a jot in those lovely old days - we were just excited to see them in action.

This kind of feels comparable to showing Slimer early in the run up to the first two to me - it's a hook that younger viewers will find funny and cute. The cat was already going to be out of the bag with the cereal, so why not? (Plus it's a hook that stokes nostalgia in older viewers without having to rely on solely 1:1 nostalgia to make the sale. It's not a giant Stay Puft stomping down the street, at least. Also, just for once it isn't Slimer! that's got to be worth something. ) It's just a shame that the delay put Baby Yoda ahead of this, so it looks like it's playing catch up. And it's likely meant to have been out almost a year ago, so we're likely looking at less polished CG.

I'm babbling. It's the slouchy everyday bumping into the fantastical. It's Ghostbusters!

In the eighties we didn't have the internet readily available to everyone. There was a little company called CSNET that had about 200 users, so Al Gore can suck it. Hollywood didn't have to worry about us net nerd's back then. While I would like to see Afterlife released sooner next month is way to soon. I'd settle for getting the June, July release date back.

Anyone have idea's for Ghostbusters cereal trail mix to sneak in to the theatre?

I don’t think it would be a bigger desperation move at all. This is coming off as more a late “See! We have tiny cute things too!”. Almost everyone knows the original GBs are back. The mini pufts was something you’d only know about if you read this forum or others like it. I think seeing the original GBs would generate genuine excitement. This got reactions all over the place.

Cinematography isn’t just about camera moves & angles. It’s mostly about lighting & that’s what what sticks out to me. The trailer that we saw had beautiful imagery and some nice lighting. Again, I know this is just one little scene(and in a supermarket no less which tends to have harsh lighting). Someone mentioned up there it could be zoomed in to 16:9 & maybe that’s it. Could be.

Well the UK got it well after it had been released in North America I think. Things weren’t as co-ordinated as they sometimes are now. You do not see the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man in the original trailer or TV spots. It was held back for general audiences in North America. I think you see him in the re-release trailer but obviously that not what we are talking about here.
