I recently came into possession of a Motorola MT500. It has a DTMF pad on the back but the front is clean like in the movie.

I have built a sound kit using the Adafruit Audio FX soundboard in combination with some of the original buttons and switches to create an interactive Ghostbusters prop.

In the videos below I talk through how I took apart and put together my modded Motorola MT500 and in the second (much shorter) video I specifically show how I made my replica antenna. I made it in real-time so hopefully, it's easy to follow and copy yourself.

Items used:
  • Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board + 2x2W Amp - WAV/OGG Trigger -16MB -
  • Adafruit LiIon/LiPoly Backpack Add-On for Pro Trinket/ItsyBitsy
  • M8 (8mmØ) Stainless Steel Socket Head Allen Bolt
  • 8mm I.D. Clear Plastic Hose PVC Tube
  • M12 Vinyl rubber bolt end cap
  • 14mm shiny shrink wrap tubing

I have actually made this now. I did enquire with another prop-maker for a specialist board but it was going to cost a lot of money for the board, the shipping and customs fees so I went for the DIY route.

I've filmed a video but I need to wait until the weekend to film my final scene. It might sound a little stupid but I want to inject a bit of humour into what's otherwise quite a dull video before I release it. I hope to upload it very soon.

Thank you for the kind words.

There are some sellers that sell kits if you don't want to do it yourself. Hyperdyne Labs, for example, sell one for $95 and there is also someone on GBfans that does a kit too.

But for me, living in the UK, it would have got prohibitively expensive by the time shipping and customs fees were added to the equation, so I thought I'd challenge myself to do it from scratch.
