I first became aware of this "re-recording" recently because it came up on the 2016 movie soundtrack when I searched for the song on Google Play Music. I was unaware of it's existence prior to this. I played it to see how they remastered it. As many of you are aware, it's quite different. But I am surprised to see people consider this a re-recording, because it is not.

There are several clues, but I'll start with this: https://imgur.com/a/E3O3Y
You see the big spike where the cursor is at about 7 seconds? It's an audible clicking noise and is present in the new mix (https://youtu.be/TaV1r341wYk?t=5) and the original (https://youtu.be/TgNWyBXBC0E?t=5s).

Here's the spectrogram of the intro: https://imgur.com/a/7E8qb

They match nearly 100%. Keep in mind, there will be some differences as they are different mixes, different volumes, different EQ etc, but they clearly come from the same source. If you're not convinced, check this out: https://clyp.it/p1csss2w
That is the new mix in the left channel and the old mix in the right channel. 100% the same, including that odd click.

There is also a weird distortion of some kind in the left channel at about 3:05, and this is present in all versions, including the music video version.
https://youtu.be/TaV1r341wYk?t=3m5s (new mix)
https://youtu.be/TgNWyBXBC0E?t=3m5s (original mix)
https://youtu.be/Fe93CLbHjxQ?t=3m5s (music video; this version the sound appears to be in the right channel)

The only thing I am unsure of is if it is a different vocal track. It sure sounds different at times, but because the new mix has the vocals pushed out so much it's hard to tell. I will try and sync that up next. I do think the music track is the same. It's possible they used a different vocal take than the original, either on purpose or by mistake (sounds crazy but it happens sometimes).

Edit 11/7: After listening to the 12" version, and the way he sings "ghost", I believe it is the same vocal track. (https://youtu.be/v3DEVCVXySc?t=1m48s).

Fascinating. I may of heard it used in the video game, but the first time I consciously heard it was when it was used on ATC. I didn't think it sounded that different. Remixed? Definitely. But rerecorded? I wouldn't of thought so had I not known it that it was supposedly a different recording. With your evidence I'm convinced it's just a remix. Nice work!
