One of my favorite things about the matty trap is the ghost trying to escape after the trap closes. Could this be duplicated with an arduino controlled trap using a vibration feedback motor? (see this video at about the 1:30 mark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uokQW8onX_k

Short answer is yes. I'm working on designing the guts of my trap right now and I plan to use Arduino. I can't see why you couldn't use a feedback motor as long as you have the space inside.

To jump in, the Nano and the Pro Mini (depending on if you're comfortable using a separate FTDI board for programming or not) work great for this type of thing.

I was planning on getting a starter kit which comes with the Uno and do a prototype/test run of my lights, servos, remote control, charging etc. then buying a smaller card for the actual installation to save space.

This is what I do as well. The Uno is a great dev board, and the Nano and Pro Mini use the same processor, and they're so cheap on ebay (around $3) I just leave them in all my projects.
