Usually when I'm with my parents and we run into someone we all know, I almost always rely on them to do the talking. When I'm alone I'm usually good at making conversation. I'm not shy at all when it's just us, or around other people, it's just when I'm around my parents and other people at the same time that I sometimes get shy. It may not even be shyness, it might just be laziness causing me to depend on them to make the conversation. I'm not afraid to be myself, but don't feel like taking part in the conversation, either. Is that normal?

It may also be down to how well you know the person versus how well your parents know them. If they've known then for longer than you, then it stands to reason there may be less things in common for you to talk with them about.
